Laurence Station's Top 10 Albums of 2000

1. Radiohead: Kid A (Capitol)
Not an experiment, just the next step forward.
2. OutKast: Stankonia (LaFace/Arista)
Breaking old rules and creating new ones with each successively innovative release.
3. PJ Harvey: Stories From the City, Stories From the Sea (Island)
The most intensely focused, musically polished work of her career.
4. Yo La Tengo: And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside-Out (Matador)
The best sounding album the Hoboken outfit has recorded.
5. Sunny Day Real Estate: The Rising Tide (Time Bomb)
Brilliantly orchestrated pop garbed in a prog rock greatcoat. Amazing.
6. Super Furry Animals: Mwng (Flydaddy)
Welsh pop has never sounded so good.
7. Sigur Rós: Ágćtis Byrjun (Fat Cat/Bubble Core)
In Icelandic the band's name means "Victory Rose," the album title, "Good Start". A Lush, eerie soundtrack for the next ice age.
8. Godspeed You Black Emperor!: Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas To Heaven (Kranky)
Orchestral rage defined.
9. Ryan Adams: Heartbreaker (Bloodshot)
Countrified rock done just right.
10. Sleater-Kinney: All Hands on the Bad One (Kill Rock Stars)
No pretensions, just straight ahead rock 'n' roll from a band that consistently delivers.
Notable near misses:
  • At The Drive-In: Relationship Of Command (Grand Royal)
  • Avalanches: Since I Left You (Modular)
